- Drum Brake
-
- The drum brake is
- housed in a hard
- metal drum attached
- to the wheel hub.
- Inside the housing,
- and unattached to
- the drum, are a
- pair of curved
- brake shoes held
- away from the drum
- by springs. When
- the brake pedal is
- pressed, fluid
- flows through the
- brake lines into
- the wheel cylinder.
- Push rods extend
- from the cylinder
- in both directions
- and press the shoes
- against the drum.
-
- When brake pedal
- pressure is
- released, the
- springs on the
- brake shoes pull
- the shoes into the
- normal released
- position. The
- moving shoes force
- the pistons inward
- and return fluid to
- the master cylinder
- reservoir.
-
- Drum brakes can
- also be used as
- parking brakes. A
- cable attached to
- the brake lever
- pulls the brake
- shoes against the
- drum when the brake
- lever is pulled.
